5. Tour Shanghai by Metro

As you know, Shanghai has the highest taxi fares in China, plus the possible traffic congestion, in most occasions,  you should just avoid using them except that you cannot manage your large pieces of luggage on your way to your hotel or airport.

Best Places to See Autumn Leaves in Shanghai (Tips, Photos & Map)

lan your Shanghai tour in autumn? If you are an enthusiastic autumn leaf peeper,  you won’t be disappointed by the seemingly concrete dominated metropolitan city of Shanghai. But the autumn leaf peeping time is relatively short in Shanghai. The best time  to see maple and ginkgo autumn  leaves start late November through mid-December.

If you happen to visit Shanghai around late November and mid December,  you may recharge yourself  by going to some places aflame with red and yellow leaves. 1. Guqi Garden (Guqiyuan Garden) 古猗园

Guqi Garden is located in Nanxiang Ancient Town, about 22 km to the northwest of Shanghai People’s Square. It is one of the most mesmerizing classical gardens in Shanghai. It can be easily reached by taking subway line 11, getting off at the station of Nanxiang (exit from Exit 2).

Quqi Garden is an Ming-era garden originally built by  an officer in the Ming dynasty. It has been rebuilt and expanded for a number of times.  Now it features a varied landscape of gardens, tea houses and corridors all surrounding a central stretch of lily pad-laden water. There are over two dozens of ginkgo and maple trees which turn yellow in late November and Mid-December, very photogenic with much photo opportunities.

2. Shanghai Botanical Garden 上海植物园

With the most species of plants in Shanghai, Shanghai Botanical Garden is definitely an idea place to comfort your eyes with the dazzling yellow and red colors in autumn. The large botanical garden covers  81 hectares, divided into spacious sectors specializing in magnolias, peonies, maples, azaleas, roses, Osmanthus, ferns, bamboo,  conifers and more.

With the coming of late November,  a cluster of trees change their colors such as ginkgo, Chinese tallow trees,  trident maple, callery pear, and spindle trees. Some trees change their colors much late, around the late December like gum trees, Chinese pistache, pond cypress and metasequoia.

3. Shanghai Gongqing National Forest Park 上海共青国家森林公园

Gongqing Forest Park is located Yangpu District, in the northeast of Shanghai’s city center, about 18 km to the northeast of Shanghai People’s Square. You may take subway line 8 and get off at the station of  Shiguang Road, then walk for 1 km to reach the park.

As a forest park, Gongqing Forest Park comprises  over 200 species of trees, totalling  over 300,000. The park is divided into two parts – north part featuring forest landscape while south part boasting small bridges and winding rivers, displaying the scenery of Southern China.

In the northeast of the park, there is an island with an area of 25,000 square meters. On the island are planted with maple, Ginkgo, Chinese tallow trees,  trident maple, callery pear, and spindle trees and more. When autumns, the island is afire with colorful autumn leaves.

4. Shanghai Binjiang Forest Park 上海滨江森林公园

Shanghai Binjiang Forest Park is located in Gaoqiao town, the northern tip of Pudong District, the largest suburb forest park nearest to Shanghai downtown, about 23 km to the northeast of Shanghai People’s Square. . There are  over 200,000 plants of arbors and bushes.

The park is divided into several area for sightseeing and visit – Rhododendron Garden, Magnolia Garden, wetland plant area, fruit area, azalea area, Yangtze River Viewing area and more. Roads are lined with spruce trees. The No.1 Wind and Rain Pavilion is ringed with maple trees. In the azalea garden, all kind of colors produce a magnificent palette when fall is in.

5. Ginkgo Trees at Shanghai Concert Hall 上海音乐厅银杏林

Even in the city center of Shanghai, you can find a good place to see autumn leaves. One street, a row of trees can be a mini-landscape of autumn.

By the side of Shanghai Concert Hall, there are two rows of ginkgo trees that bounce off spectacular yellow colors when autumn comes. They look magnificent with a backdrop of the classical building of Shanghai Concert Hall, oft lauded as a perfect spot for wedding photos.

6. Ginkgo Trees along Dagu Road 大沽路银杏树

In fact, strolling along Dagu Road, Shimen Road and Weihai Road, people will find myriad ginkgo trees.

7. Ginkgo Trees at Siping Road 四平路银杏树

8. Old Ginkgo Trees at Jiading 嘉定银杏古树

Jiading is a district of Shanghai, about 37 km to the northwest of Shanghai People’s Square. In Jiading District, there is a park named “Ginkgo Park”. The Ginkgo Park is a Jiangnan style landscaping that mainly surrounds the 10 old ginkgo trees.

The 10 old ginkgo trees are clustered in a small forest.  The average age of the ginkgo trees are around 200 years with a height from 19.3 m to 20.4 m. The ginkgo trees covers an area of 600 square meters. The late autumn finds the Ginkgo Park a wonderland of yellow colors, radiating out marvelous autumn view.

9.Dianshan Lake  淀山湖

Dianshan is a freshwater lake west of Zhujiajiao, Qingpu, in the Shanghai, about 60 km to the west of Shanghai People’s Square.  Dianshan Lake covers an area of 63 square km, 2 meters deep, connecting Huang Pu River and Wusong River,  rich in freshwater husbandry.

Dianshan Lake is the largest wetland in Shanghai, a mesmerizing tourist destination.  Poplar trees ring the banks of Dianshan Lake and maple trees flank the main roads passing through Dianshan Lake,  presenting a wonderful picture of autumn landscape.

Your guide will be waiting for you in the lobby in the morning at around 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM. (Your tour guide will contact you for the exact pick-up time the day before your departure). A comfortable car will transfer you and your guide to Zhouzhuang: a water town built amid canals, ponds, and lakes.

You will take a gondola and witness the way of life of people living by the canals, first hand. This medieval water town has a history dating back more than 900 years, and has houses and bridges built in both the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing dynasties (1644–1911).

We have tailored the 3 most representative old houses into our itineraries to ensure you will not leave here without knowing of their provenance and history: 1) Shen’s House is southeast of Fu’an Bridge on Nanshi;Street; 2) Zhang’s House; 3) Ye Chucang’s Residence.

Shanghai Boutique Tour has set up a Refreshments Kiosk at the Zhouzhuang Watertown. Shanghai Boutique Tour customers will receive free drinking water, beers and maps at the service site.

In the afternoon, our guide will take you to Jinx ancient water town for a visit, compared with other ancient towns in China, Jinx Ancient Town is simpler, less sophisticated, and quiet. It is a small town (only one square kilometer in area) that has 16 lakes and 238 rivers. The town also has 36 ancient bridges spanning the rivers. The bridges represent various styles and were built during different periods in history.

The town has many museums, such as the first museum of antique tiles and bricks in China, the “red porcelain products museum” and the “root caving museum of China.” and our guide will take you to see all of them.

Hotel pick-up and first visit Zhujiajiao water town

Our comfortable van will take you to the 200 year old water town – Zhujiajiao, known as the best example of Yangtze river delta life and its old architecture. It is often dubbed as as the Shanghai’s Venice. (about 1 hour on the way). Zhujiajiao was once a trading area due to the many canals, which were used to ferry goods in little boats and barges. Boats are still very much part of the charm of the place. Small boats are ubiquitous here, functioning as a nice way to get a view of the town and experience the local life, as they still serve as an important transportation method for local people.

You will be taking the gondolas with our guide on the water way to view the facade of the ancient town from different angles and take some great photos of the swathes of pretty cole flowers in Kezhi Garden. Different from other cursory tours of Zhujiajiao, you will be also uniquely arranged to visit the three hidden gems – Kezhi Yuan (photographing the cole flowers), Qing Dynasty Post Office and Fangsheng Bridge.

Stop at a Shanghai Boutique Tour carefully selected restaurant by the side of the water way, enjoy freshly prepared local food on the second floor where you can view the most interesting and bustling part of the water village.

12:30 AM – 4:00 PM
In the afternoon drive 1 hour to the Shanghai World Financial Center and go up to the 100th floor for the panoramic views of the city. It is the world’s 8th tallest building, and the 4th tallest structure in Mainland China. The 100th floor has a viewing gallery that is 55 meters long. It is the second highest observation deck in China. It is higher than the viewing platforms on the Canadian TV Tower (447 meters) and the Dubai Tower (440 meters).

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Visit to the Bund
Next, we will drive you to one of the top scenic spots in Shanghai: the Bund. It is a fantastic walkway along the Huangpu river and across the street you will see some of the most unique and wonderful buildings in older Shanghai. To avoid giving you the most cursory of tours, we will furnish you with a map of the Bund where we have labelled the 17 most representative buildings and a guide to the differing architectures of Shanghai when your trip is confirmed. You will receive an informative pamphlet of photos of Shanghai’s new, gleaming skyscrapers, together with the history and classic architecture of its colonial past.

Transfer back to your hotel.
Going back to your hotel in Shanghai will normally take about 20 to 30 minutes. Likewise, for a Shanghai train station. Going to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport directly normally takes about 1.5 hours while 2 hours for going to Pudong airport from the Bund.

Shanghai Suzhou Zhouzhuang Day Tour from US$ 95

Pick up from your hotel in Shanghai around 8:00 am. Drive about 1.5 hour and get to Suzhou – a well-known historical and cultural city. The city is often dubbed as “The Venice of the East.” Its famous private gardens are listed as World Culture Heritage.

First visit Net Master Garden,the best and most celebrated as a model Ming Dynasty Garden in all of Suzhou. The Garden of the Master of the Nets is really a masterpiece. The good use of space is the most effective thing about this garden. Rock arrangements and beautiful fish pools match each other as do the house and garden parts. The garden also holds many structures of using lattice windows to frame views of flowers or bamboo.

Then move on to Pingjiang Road for a walk. This 800-year old street is the best preserved ancient “water lane” ( in contrast with “water town”) in Suzhou. You cannot find a better place in China in which modernity and tradition match hand in hand. 

Then visit the Ancient City Gate and Grand Canal. The Panmen City Gate is the oldest city gate in existence in Suzhou city. It used to be one of the eight city gates during the Spring & Autumn Annals (770-476 BC) when Suzhou was the capital of the Wu Kingdom. The Grand Canal is one of the greatest ancient projects in China and is the longest man-made canal in world. 

After lunch, visit Zhouzhuang Water Town. Zhouzhuang is known as the No.01 Watertown in China. This over-900 year old watertown has become a trove of oriental culture with its simple and pristine custom, unique folklore, the well preserved ancient residential houses and mesmerizing water town views. You will board a Chinese style gondala to cruise the water town.

After the tour in Suzhou and Zhouzhuang, transferred back to your midtown hotel in Shanghai.
